Can a Returned Key Really Be a Window Into a Tenants’ Soul?

We Just Had Some Tenant’s Move Out . . .

We just had some tenants move out.  The relationship had been sour from the start.  Not to say that there were not some legitimate issues with respect to the property, because there were, but try as we might to make accommodations as best we could (the unit was in a condo complex, and the issues had to do with a roof leak, so our hands were tied for the most part as we have no authority to touch the exterior of the premises) no matter what we did we were faced with a barrage of venomous vitriol at every turn.  Truthfully, they exuded hate with every conversation.

Finally, we were able to make arrangements for them to move-out early — no penalties, no fees, and no hard feelings on our part.  The entire situation had been as wearying for us as it had been for the tenants.  While not going into details, suffice it to say that rather than cooperating as civil human beings, they thought that combat and finger-pointing was the way to go.  So be it.

Upon their move-out, the tenants dropped an envelope with keys off at the office.  After the experience we had just been through, and given the negative aura that surrounded the relationship from the beginning, imagine our not so surprised surprise when this is what we found inside . . .

So, the question remains — Can a Returned Key Really Be a Window Into a Tenants’ Soul?
