Advice To Tenants Regarding The Vagaries of Life

This advice to tenants is going to be blunt and to the point.  Are you ready?  Here it comes . . .

Just because you rent a property, rather than owning it, there is no guarantee that life will magically become free of annoyances and inconveniences.  Huh?

What I’m getting at is the odd notion that not too few tenants have that their landlord somehow has an obligation to guarantee against all inconveniences, and that should any inconveniences arise, the landlord is responsible for compensating the tenant for any such inconveniences — a more ill-conceived notion has never been devised by the mind of man.

Of course, such a notion is pure and utter nonsense, yet many tenants delude themselves into thinking that the world owes them absolute peace at all times.  Reality, on the other hand, works like this:  roofs will leak, things will break, parts will have to be ordered, inconvenience and aggravations will have to be endured — such is life.

No landlord can guarantee and indemnify against such natural realities of life.  Of course, the landlord has an obligation to swiftly and proactively deal with any issues that can and will arise, but as for the aggravation and inconvenience that is part and parcel of such events, these are for the tenants to endure, preferably with grace and civility, which is absolutely no different than if they happened to own the home themselves.

Landlords are expected to act quickly, professionally, and with grace during trying times — exactly the way that tenants are expected to act.  The landlord is not an enemy/adversary of the tenant during trying times, yet many tenants choose to take this approach, thus exacerbating uncomfortable situations unnecessarily.  It is always best when all parties work together to mutually resolve problems. Mutual respect and understanding is the correct approach.

Hopefully, this advice to tenants regarding the vagaries of life and how to deal with them will be taken for what it is intended to be — a dose of reality injected into a deluded world.
